A local state representative is sponsoring legislation dealing with the use of drones by hunters to locate wounded game.
State. Rep Norrine Hammond (R-Macomb) is sponsoring House Bill 4291, which would allow the use of unmanned aircraft to track and locate wounded wild birds and mammals, including deer and wild turkeys, under strict conditions.
Under this measure, drones could only be used to recover animals wounded by a properly licensed hunter during an open season, with prior permission from the landowner for launch and landing, and must be operated without harassing wildlife.
Hammond says the legislation aims to regulate the use of drones by hunters as a better, more efficient way to locate game they have wounded.
The drone system is currently being used in Indiana, where thermal drones are used to recover wild game.
