Aledo, IL – Mercer County Better Together (MCBT) is set to host an inaugural event aimed at raising awareness and funds for local families in need of housing assistance. The event, called Night in a Car, will take place on Friday, February 7, with three locations across Mercer County: Eliza Community Center in the west, Mercer County VFW Post 1571 in Aledo, and Preemption United Methodist Church in the east.
In 2024, MCBT received 46 emergency housing assistance requests, representing approximately 100 individuals. “The need more than doubled from the previous year,” said Kyle McEwen, Executive Director of MCBT. “We were able to help house 42 people, but the rising demand highlights the critical need for community support.”
The event serves as a homeless simulation and fundraiser, offering participants an immersive experience of what many in Mercer County face daily. “It’s about creating empathy and awareness for rural homelessness, which often goes unseen,” McEwen said. Participants will spend the night in their cars, symbolizing the plight of individuals who lack stable housing.
How Night in a Car Works
The event starts at 7 p.m. and runs until the early hours of February 8. Participants are encouraged to secure sponsorships, with a suggested fundraising goal of $500 per car. All proceeds will benefit the Mercer County Emergency Housing Fund, which is currently nearly depleted.
“This fund is essential for bridging the gap for families who need help with rent, utility deposits, or temporary shelter,” McEwen explained. “These aren’t just handouts—these are hardworking individuals and families who want to remain in Mercer County but need a little help to get back on their feet.”

Community members can participate as individuals or teams, sponsor cars, or volunteer. MCBT provides ready-made social media posts to help spread the word. Businesses and organizations can also support the event through tiered sponsorships.
