Velma C. Doss, 91 of Hamlet, Illinois, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2026, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island Hospital in Rock Island, Illinois. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m., Friday, February 27, at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo, Illinois. The funeral service will directly follow at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Hamlet Cemetery. Velma was born on August 21, 1934, at her family farm in Mercer County to Wayne and Alice (Kenney) Muhlenburg. She married Richard “Dick” Doss on February 13, 1955, in Millersburg, Illinois. Together, they raised four children, Vicki, Pennie, Jr., and Angie. They were married 65 years before his passing on December 9, 2020.
Velma helped operate the gas station/grocery that she and Richard owned in Hamlet. After that endeavor, she enjoyed raising her children. Once her husband retired, he purchased the old Mercer County Hospital, and they worked tirelessly as a family to turn them into the Doss (Piddle) Apartments. She enjoyed spending time with family, square dancing, spending winters in Texas, snacking on onion rings, drinking cappuccinos, and eating any sweet treat she could get.
Those left to cherish Velma’s memory include her children, Vicki (Tom) Chism of Seaton, Pennie (Terry) Ringle of Aledo, Jr. (Wendy) Doss of Hamlet, and Angie (Ryan) Howlett of Aledo; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean and Tootie; and one brother, Don.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; one sister, Violet; and one brother, Ken.
