Larry DeWayne Greer, 87 of Somonauk, IL, formerly of Aledo, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Services will be held on Friday, February 6, at Nelson Funeral Homes & Crematory in Sandwich, IL. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon with the funeral held after. Memorials can be made to the Aledo Park District or LaSalle Manor Retreat Center.
He was born on November 24, 1938, in Aledo, IL, the son of Merwin and Marion (McWhorter) Greer. Larry graduated from Aledo High School in 1957. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army Reserves, serving for 6 years and earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. Larry married Karen McCreight and they had two sons, Todd and Corey.
Larry was later united in marriage to Sherry Lee and they spent many happy years together. Larry and Sher vacationed throughout the United States with Gettysburg; Sedona, AZ; and Disney World being a few of their favorite vacation spots. Larry worked at Greer Home Improvement and later worked for many years in banking, retiring as a Vice President at Associated Bank. After retiring from banking, Larry worked part-time as a handyman at the LaSalle Manor Retreat Center. He enjoyed coaching and attending all the sporting events his sons were involved in and later enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting and school events.
He was an avid sports fan, and he especially liked watching the Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs, and Fighting Illini! One of Larry’s great loves was the farm owned by his Granddad and Grandmother McWhorter. He would spend many summers living on the farm with his grandparents, tending to the cattle and doing chores. He and his cousin, Mort McWhorter, have raised cows together for the past 30+ years and Larry loved coming down to Aledo to check on his cows as often as he could.
Larry is survived by his wife, Sherry Greer; his children, Todd (Ellen) Greer of Elmhurst, IL, Corey (Tedra) Greer of Eldridge, IA, Becky (Steven) Schupbach of Sandwich, IL, and Kelly (Eric) Finn of Wintergarden, FL; his nine grandchildren, Derek (Hannah), Adam, Sean (Meagan), Anna, Adison, Janna, Gracie, Madie, and Adam; his five great-grandchildren, Holden, August, Lane, Waylon, and MaKenna; his siblings, Don Greer and Jeanne (Phil) Blythe; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merwin and Marion Greer.
