Mercer County erased a seven-point fourth-quarter deficit and held on in the final seconds to beat St. Bede 45-44 at home in girls basketball on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles (21-5) trailed 39-32 in the fourth quarter, but responded with an 11-0 run to take a 43-39 lead in the final minute of the game.
Mercer County then fouled St. Bede guard Lili McClain twice, once on a three-point attempt and once beyond the three-point line with the Bruins in the bonus. McClain sank all five free-throw attempts, with the Golden Eagles going 1-2 from the line during that stretch, tying the game 44-44.
Mercer County sophomore guard Leah Collison was then fouled in the backcourt with 9.8 seconds remaining and split her two free throws to lift the Golden Eagles to the win.
Shadia Williams poured in a game-high 20 points for Mercer County, while Whitney Collison added 13 points.
McClain paced the Bruins (13-11) with 16 points in the setback.
With the win, Mercer County matches the program record for single-season wins in girls basketball at 21.
