Sherrard was just able to cross the finish line in a 55-52 win over Mercer County in Aledo on Friday.
Leading 52-41 with under two minutes to play in the game, the Tigers were unable to grab a defensive rebound and let the ball bounce out of bounds with 1:58 remaining. The Golden Eagles took advantage of the extra life and closed the game on an 11-3 run, pulling as close as 53-52 with under 15 seconds to play.
Sherrard senior Carter Brown knocked down a pair of free throws to extend Sherrard’s lead back to three, and a three-point attempt at the buzzer to tie the game from Mercer County came up short.
The Tigers (13-4, 5-0 TRAC West) made 11 three-pointers in the win. Sherrard senior Ryder Veronda buried eight of them, which set a single-game program record. He finished with a game-high 24 points. Brown added 13, and freshman Nolan Kline scored 11 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.
Brady McPeek paced Mercer County (9-8, 3-2 TRAC West) with 19 points in the setback. Spencer Andresen, 13, and Holden DeMuth, 10, also scored in double figures for the Golden Eagles.
Sherrard has won six straight games.
