Sherrard School District Shares Teacher Retention Strategies at IASB Conference

The Sherrard School District presented in front of a statewide audience at last weekend’s Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Joint Annual Conference in Chicago.

The presentation centered around the district’s use of the Teacher Vacancy Grant, which has strengthened teacher retention in the district. Sherrard is in the third year of the pilot program and receives around $92,000 annually as part of the state-funded initiative, which is designed to address teacher shortages by funding recruitment and retention strategies tailored to each district’s needs.

Sherrard School District Superintendent Dr. Carl Johnson says the grant has been helpful.

Johnson presented along with Sherrard School Board President Rhys Fullerlove and junior high history teacher Joe Veronda, who highlighted teaching as a second career through his journey from retiring from law enforcement to becoming a teacher.
