Sherrard (20-5) avoided an upset from Rockridge (13-18) in a 36-33 regional semifinal win at the 2A Orion Regional Monday.
After leading 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers allowed the Rockets to open the second on an 8-2 run to take a 16-11 lead. Sherrard responded by outscoring Rockridge 9-2 the rest of the period to tie the game 18-18 at halftime. The Tigers scored the first nine points of the third quarter to take a 27-18 advantage, which was the largest lead of the night for either team.
Rockridge fought back to make it a one-possession game in the final minute of the fourth quarter, but a potential game-tying three-point attempt by Keaten Needham was off the mark as time expired.
Adalynn Elsbury scored a game-high 14 points for Sherrard. Violet Meskan added 10 points for the Tigers.
Erica Danner paced Rockridge with 10 points.
Sherrard advances to Thursday’s regional championship game to play Monmouth-Roseville (22-10) after the Titans beat Kewanee 66-37 in Monday’s second semifinal. Sherrard swept Monmouth-Roseville in the regular season, beating the Titans 58-48 on Jan. 6 and 53-49 on Feb. 6.
Sherrard will make its 13th regional championship game appearance in the past 14 seasons in girls basketball Thursday in Orion. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
