Today’s Senior Spotlight shines on Payton Ruggles, a proud member of the Mercer County High School Class of 2025. WRMJ’s Ty Taylor caught up with Payton to reflect on her favorite memories, achievements, and future plans.
A well-rounded student and athlete, Payton shared highlights from both the classroom and the playing field. Athletically, one of her most memorable moments was winning a softball regional championship her sophomore year. “That was a huge moment for me,” she recalled.
Outside of sports, Payton found joy in the arts and student leadership. She was active in jazz band, show choir, and has been a dedicated member of the student council for four years. Whether it was organizing blood drives or delivering meals for Teacher Appreciation Week, Payton enjoyed making a difference. “I just like representing my school and being a helping hand,” she said.
Academically, she began her high school years drawn to math, but more recently developed a passion for English composition and AP-level courses. Payton also spoke about the unique experience of sharing the band room with her uncle, who serves as a music teacher. “We nitpick each other a lot,” she laughed, “but he’s a great guy and I’ve enjoyed having him there.”
Payton’s senior year has been especially exciting on the softball field. She and her teammates have posted an impressive record of 17-4 so far, and she’s proud of their growth throughout the season. “If you told me that at the beginning of the year, I wouldn’t have believed you,” she said.
Looking ahead, Payton plans to attend Carl Sandburg College, where she’ll continue both her softball and volleyball careers. After completing her general education, she’ll transfer to Illinois State University to pursue a degree in elementary education. “I want to have an impact on kids’ lives and how they perceive the world,” she said.
