The Mercer County School District is launching a girls wrestling program at the high school this year.
During last week’s Mercer County School District Board of Education meeting, the district approved starting a separate girls wrestling program. Previously, girls at Mercer County who wrestled competed during the boys’ season.
The girls wrestling season begins Oct. 26, two weeks before the boys wrestling season starts Nov. 9.
Mercer County High School wrestling coach Jeremy Finch spoke with WRMJ this week.
Finch says the program will hire a separate head coach for the girls wrestling team.
Mercer County had three girls wrestle last season. Finch said nine girls have shown interest in taking up the sport this year.
Mercer County joins Erie-Prophetstown as the only other program in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) to offer girls wrestling as its own sport.
