That Year The Cubs Played At The Mercer County Fairgrounds

Let’s get another local history lesson this summer. The Major League Baseball season is now in full swing. Remember that one summer when the Chicago Cubs played in Aledo, at the Mercer County Fairgrounds? It was a long time ago, but it happened. Late Mercer County historian Stephanie Braucht told us the story a few summers ago.

The Cubs won the game 9 to 2. The estimated crowd was 2,000.

Braucht says the Cubs traveled by train to get to Aledo. They left from St. Louis, where they were originally supposed to play, to Burlington and then to Aledo. They stayed in Aledo just for the day.
