Shirley A. Barnes, 93 of Aledo, Illinois, passed away Friday, January 13, 2023 at Friendship Manor in Rock Island. The visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, January 20, with a Rosary beginning at 4 p.m. at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 21, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Aledo. Interment will be at Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date.
Shirley was born May 12, 1929 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Helen Engel Mathias. She was a graduate from Davenport High School. Shirley married Edward J. Barnes on January 12, 1949 in Davenport. He preceded her in death on November 20, 2002.
Shirley was a loving homemaker who took amazing care of her family. She was very active in the community, volunteering with many organizations. She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Aledo, the Mercer County VFW Auxiliary, past president of the Reynolds American Legion Auxiliary, the Mercer County Farm Bureau, election judge for the Mercer County Democrat party in Perryton and other townships, and the Voiture 40 et 8 group. She also was an avid Quad City Mallards and River Bandits fan.
She is survived by her children, Susan (Steve) Kolb of Joppa, Alabama, Chris (Debra) Barnes of Aledo, Mike (Susan) Barnes of Ahola, Oregon, Annette (Mark) Hoeft of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Pat (Carolyn) Barnes of Palmyra, Missouri, and Theresa (Jerry) Shinners of Davenport; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Deborah Allmon; granddaughter, Christine Fisher; and three brothers.
Memorial contributions may be left to St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Aledo.
