Saturday Sports: Rockridge Beats IVC To Win Regional Title

Local sports results are presented by MercyOne Genesis Physical Therapy.

Rockridge defeated IVC 13-3 in six innings to win its second baseball regional championship in the last three years in Aledo on Saturday.

The Grey Ghosts (16-17) took their only lead of the game, 1-0, on back-to-back two-out hits in the top of the first inning by Brody Garceau and Sam Griggs.

The Rockets (29-7) answered with a two-out three-run triple by Owen Steel in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 advantage. Rockridge would lead for the remainder of the game.

Steele delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the third, and Cullen Schwigen crushed a two-run home run to extend Rockridge’s lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Schwigen’s homer was his ninth of the season, which set a new single-season program record.

IVC cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the fifth inning, but stranded the bases loaded. The Rockets went on to score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.

Steele finished 4-4 with six RBI.

Carsen DeKeyrel earned the win for Rockridge, allowing three runs in six innings.

The Rockets advance to the 2A IVC Sectional and will play Brimfield-Elmwood (30-5) in the sectional semifinals on Wednesday.
