Mercer County (1-0) opened its softball season with a 17-5 win over Abingdon-Avon (0-2) at home Tuesday.
The Tornadoes scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The Golden Eagles answered with six in the bottom half and added six more runs in the second inning to go ahead 12-3 heading to the third.
Payton Ruggles went 3-4 with five RBI for the Golden Eagles. Kylie Weeks was 2-2 at the plate with four RBI.
Elise Cook took the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two earned runs in four innings.
