Mercer County (8-15) snapped a nine-game losing streak in boys basketball with a 50-41 win over Farmington (7-14) at home Monday.
The Golden Eagles led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and the Farmers never made it a single-possession game the rest of the way. Mercer County held a 25-20 halftime advantage and opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run to push the lead to 35-20. However, Farmington answered with a 10-0 run of their own to cut the deficit back to five. The Golden Eagles scored the final three points of the quarter to take a 38-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Mercer County extended its lead to 46-32 with just under four minutes to play. Farmington then forced a couple of turnovers and buried three consecutive three-pointers to score nine unanswered points in less than a minute. The Farmers stole the ball again and missed another open perimeter shot that would have cut the deficit to two.
Carson Boelens led Mercer County with 19 points. Brady McPeek added 16 in the win.
Boston Smith scored a game-high 20 points for Farmington. Landon Crawford has 13.
