Mercer County voters will be electing a new sheriff during Tuesday’s primary election.
The three candidates, Casey Switzer, Thomas Smith, and Clayton Brendal, are all running in the Republican primary.
Switzer and Brendal are both currently Mercer County Sheriff’s Department deputies, while Smith serves as an Aledo Police Department officer.
WRMJ asked all three candidates why they were running for sheriff last week.

Incumbent Mercer County Sheriff Dusty Terrill is not seeking re-election.
Mercer County voters will also be electing a county treasurer on Tuesday. Incumbent Bev Lower is being challenged by Mindy King in the Republican primary.
Like the sheriff race, there is no candidate for county treasurer on the Democratic ballot.
