Marvin L. Smith, 92 of Aledo, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the MercyOne Genesis Aledo Medical Center. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, July 18, at the Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo. The funeral service will directly follow at 1 p.m. His final resting place will be the Viola Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be left to the Connie Sue Smith Memorial Scholarship, Furever Friends for Mercer County, or to the College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Aledo. Marvin was born on November 10, 1933, in rural Viola, the son of Charles and Merle Williams Smith. He graduated from Moline High School with the Class of 1951. He married Mary Larson on February 2, 1952, they later divorced. He later married Joyce Guthrie on June 28, 1964, at the College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Aledo.
In his earlier years, Marvin worked at Sumption Motors, John Deere Harvester, Rock Island Argus, Moline Dispatch, Harris Intertype Corporation as a field engineer, Lohse Automotive, International Harvester of East Moline as a machine repairman, and lastly member of the UAW Local 1306-1304 skilled tradesmen, eventually retiring after 20 years. In total he worked for 48 years.
He was a member of the Muscatine Moose Lodge 388, Moline Masonic Lodge 1014 since 1957, Moline Consistory Scottish Rite, Tri State Bluegrass Music Association, Edwards River Antique Engine Association, and a former member of the Bald Bluff Antique Tractor Pullers.
Marvin loved stock car racing, one of his proudest moments was winning the 1958 Speed Bowl Park track championship. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, antique tractor pulls, restoring old tractors, bluegrass and country music, and traveling, especially to Texas in the winter.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Smith, and three children, Susan (Lane) Cummings, Tim (Rita) Smith, and Tom Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; sister, Jeannie Smith; brothers, Bob, Tom, and Duane Smith; and daughter, Connie Smith.
