A local state senator has introduced legislation that aims to reform the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Illinois.
State Sen. Neil Anderson (R-Andalusia) is sponsoring Senate Bill 2908, which would require the Illinois Department of Human Services to seek federal approval to prohibit SNAP benefits from being used to purchase candy, soft drinks, energy drinks, and other highly processed products.
Anderson says he wants to keep SNAP focused on preserving access to staple foods, fresh groceries, and medically necessary nutrition products, while ensuring recipients and retailers receive clear notice and guidance before any changes are implemented.
SNAP is a federal program that provides monthly benefits to low-income individuals and families to help them afford food.
The bill currently sits in the Senate Assignments Committee.
