Mercer County’s Eli Burns and Orion’s Maddux Anderson advanced to the 1A semifinals at the IHSA Individual Wrestling State Finals in Champaign on Thursday.
Burns (22-4) won his first two bouts at 165 pounds over Shelbyville’s Ryne Peavler and Northridge Prep’s Adam Haddad. Burns will take on Bowden Delaney (49-3) of Tremont in the semifinals Friday.
At 190 pounds, Anderson (50-3) picked up wins over Casen Lyons of Sacred Heart-Griffin and Tolono Unity’s Hunter Eastin. Anderson is matched up with Lena-Winslow/Stockton’s Oliver McPeek (44-5) in the semifinal round Friday.
Elsewhere, Rockridge senior Jude Finch’s (39-1) quest for back-to-back state titles ended with a quarterfinal loss to Tolono Unity’s Taylor Finley in the 138-pound quarterfinals.
