A nationwide egg shortage caused by avian influenza is driving up prices and making it harder for grocery stores to keep shelves stocked.
At Mercer Market in Aledo, eggs are still available, but shoppers may experience some sticker shock. Store manager Jeff Sedam says while supply hasn’t been an issue, the cost has reached unprecedented levels.
“So far, quantities for us have not been a problem. The amount and the retail on the cost is still pretty crazy, but we’ve yet to get a delivery where we’ve been denied anything that we’ve wanted to purchase. However, the quantities are low, so you’re having to make some price adjustments because of that.”
The surge in egg prices has left customers paying more than ever before.
“Unfortunately, yes. I think it’s definitely the highest I’ve ever seen a dozen eggs. I think we’re at $7.99 per dozen right now, and I don’t expect it to stop anytime soon.”
Sedam says the store will continue to monitor the market closely and lower prices as soon as possible.
While eggs may be costly, shoppers preparing for an incoming snowstorm shouldn’t have trouble finding other essentials.
“I don’t know how crazy it’s going to get, but it still continues to climb. Yes, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen any snow around here, and we’re prepared. We’ll wait and see what Mother Nature brings us, but we’re fully stocked and, knock on wood, we’ll have what you need when you come in.”
Despite the challenges, Mercer Market is celebrating 38 years of serving Aledo this month, continuing its commitment to keeping shelves stocked for the community.
