Aledo, IL – As Aledo gets ready for a busy Saturday on August 23, organizers at the Mercer County VFW Post #1571 are asking for the community’s help to make their Rummage Sale and Rib Cook-Off a success — and the need right now is for donations.
The fundraiser is being held the same day as Aledo Antiques Day, but it is not part of the official Antiques Day schedule. It’s a chance to support local veterans while enjoying the energy of a big day in town.
“We really need people to take a look around their homes and donate what they can,” said Suzy DeKeyrel, one of the event organizers. “Clothing, home décor, small electronics, toys, books — as long as it’s clean and in good condition, we’ll take it.”
Items can be dropped off at the VFW (106 SW 3rd Ave, Aledo) during the following times:

Tuesday, August 19 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Wednesday, August 20 | 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Thursday & Friday, August 21–22 | 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. (or by appointment)

All items are available by donation, allowing shoppers to pay what they can and take home what they need.
“This is about helping people,” said Angie Scardino. “There’s no pressure — just give what you’re able. It’s a great way to support the VFW and the Auxiliary.”
Also Happening: Rib Cook-Off & Queen of Hearts Drawing
Stick around for the Rib Cook-Off, which begins at 8 a.m., with judging at 3 p.m. Entry is $40 and includes ribs, water, and ice. All meat must be cooked on-site. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and People’s Choice.

The day wraps up with the Queen of Hearts drawing at 6 p.m., with the jackpot currently sitting at $72,145 and climbing.
