MercyOne Genesis Medical Center in Aledo is partnering with LifeServe Blood Center to host a community blood drive on Thursday, June 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. inside the hospital. The event aims to boost the local blood supply during the summer season, when donations often decline.
Michaela Niemeyer with LifeServe says the need is urgent and often overlooked. “Only about three percent of the population donates blood annually, but 90 percent of people will need a transfusion at some point in their lives,” she said. “We’re asking people to take an hour of their time to save lives.”
Blood donations are especially vital in June, which is observed as National Cancer Awareness Month. Cancer patients alone account for 25 percent of all blood usage in the United States.
Kim Nylin, lab manager at MercyOne Genesis, says the donation process is easier than ever. “They don’t even do the finger poke anymore,” she said. “The donation itself takes about 5 to 10 minutes, and then you get snacks and drinks afterward.”
To prepare, donors are encouraged to eat a good meal the night before and stay well-hydrated the day of the drive. Participants must be at least 16 years old and meet basic health requirements.
Unlike previous events held on mobile units, this drive will take place inside the hospital, offering a more comfortable experience for donors.
