A local Illinois lawmaker pushing to end abortions in the state has stepped down from Illinois Senate GOP leadership.
State Senator Neil Anderson (R-Andalusia) filed a bill that would define preborn children at any stage of biological development as people.
The measure also says that anyone who has an abortion could be charged with murder. Anderson also filed a bill to reinstate the death penalty for first-degree murder.
Illinois Senate Republican leader John Curran says the bill has no support.
“I don’t support his proposal; no other Republican legislator supports his proposal, House or Senate,” said Curran. “It’s an extreme proposal. I do not view it as a pro-life proposal; I view it as an anti-woman proposal about punishment.”
As a result of both proposals, Anderson was forced to resign from Senate Republican leadership.
