Mercer County voters will be electing a new sheriff next year.
Mercer County Sheriff Dusty Terrill will not be seeking re-election in 2026. He has served in the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department since 1997 and was elected sheriff in 2018.
Terrill says a variety of factors led to the decision to step away after his current term.
Three people have announced their candidacy for Mercer County Sheriff in 2026.
Casey Switzer and Clayton Brendal, both Mercer County sheriff’s deputies, and Thomas Smith, an Aledo Police Department officer, are running for the Republican nomination for the position.
