Mercer County SWCD To Host Annual Meeting, Fish Fry, And Hands-On Conservation Event – RSVP By July 4

The Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District is inviting the public to a unique combination of farm education, conservation, and community at its 2025 Annual Meeting and Dinner—set for Thursday, July 17, at 2163 Highway 17, Aledo.

The evening will feature a fish and chicken fry catered by Keith’s Cooking, along with informative demonstrations and a farmer-led panel discussion covering key conservation topics.

“We’ll be doing live pond shocking at John Swearingen’s pond,” said Jessica Grissom of the Mercer County SWCD. “Herman Brothers will demonstrate how they use special equipment to temporarily stun fish. It’s a safe method that helps analyze pond health and fish populations.”

Guests will also hear from representatives of the American Farmland Trust, who will present on nutrient management and the growing benefits of cover crops for soil health and productivity.

“There’s a lot of trial and error in cover cropping, so we’re bringing in farmers who’ve been doing it for years to share their insights,” Grissom said. “We also have a cover crop grant this year and will be giving away free cereal rye and triticale seed.”

The event includes a meal of fish fillets, chicken strips, baked beans, coleslaw, and cookies. Guests are encouraged to RSVP by Friday, July 4, and select their meal option when doing so. While there’s no set cost to attend, a $10 donation per meal is recommended and includes a raffle ticket for door prizes.

“This is a chance to learn, connect with your neighbors, and enjoy some great food,” said Grissom. “Everyone is welcome, and we’d love to see new faces join us.”
