Kyran Ballard is graduating from Sherrard High School as more than just a student—he’s leaving as a performer, a leader, and a future educator inspired by the very teachers who shaped his path. Over the past four years, Kyran immersed himself in Sherrard’s performing arts scene, gaining confidence and discovering his passion through music and theater.
“Band in general has been one of my favorite experiences,” Kyran said. From concert and jazz band to marching band, he found a sense of belonging in music. His performances became a form of self-expression, helping him connect with classmates and create friendships that he says will last beyond high school. “It’s the freedom of making music that drew me in—it just makes me feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be.”
His time in theater is newer but just as meaningful. This year, Kyran took the stage in the play Arsenic and Old Lace, portraying the memorable character Teddy Brewster. The experience was transformative. “It was hands down one of the most fun things I’ve done,” he said, reflecting on how it helped him grow more confident in front of an audience.
Academically, Kyran developed a passion for history, particularly U.S. history. “I like learning about how things were in the past compared to now. There’s so much to take from it.” His teachers, especially those in the history department, inspired him to look toward education as a career. “They made history exciting. They had fun with it. I want to do that for others.”
Kyran plans to attend Western Illinois University in Macomb this fall, with the goal of becoming a history teacher. He wants to inspire future students the way his teachers inspired him.
Looking back on his time at Sherrard, Kyran says the school’s greatest strength is its sense of community. “It really feels like a family. The adults here are trusting, the relationships are genuine, and you feel supported.”
As he turns the page toward college and his future classroom, Kyran carries with him the lessons learned from music, theater, and the halls of Sherrard. He’s ready to step into a new role—teacher, mentor, and leader for the next generation.
