110 Years Later, Shale City Brickyards Remain An Important Part Of Wrigley Field Legacy

Work being done at the former Shale City Brickyards.

Memories of the Shale City Brickyards this week as Wrigley Field celebrated another milestone. On Apil 23, 1914, the first major league game was played at the site, which was originally known as Weeghman Park before being named Wrigley Field in 1926.  We spoke about the Shale City Brickyards connection with late Mercer County historian Stephanie Braucht back in April of 2017.

Braucht would pass away in October of 2017, just five months after that interview.
The Shale City Brickyards operated from 1912 through 1969. At their height in the 1920’s they employed upwards of 100 people and manufactured a half-million bricks per week.
