Arlene Grace Shotwell – Services 1/27/24

Arlene Grace Shotwell, 82 of Joy, IL, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at Mercer Manor after losing a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, January 26, and the funeral service is 10 a.m., Saturday, January 27. Both the visitation and the funeral will be held at Fippinger’s Funeral Home, Aledo. Arlene was born on August 4, 1941, in Muscatine, IA, to Clarence and Grace (Kennedy) Thomas. She was a farm girl and attended one-room schoolhouses, Joy School, and graduated from Aledo High School in 1959. She attended one year of college at Black Hawk College before she met and married Ronald (Ron) L. Shotwell of New Boston, IL, on April 8, 1962, in Millersburg, IL. They had two children, Richard and Sharon.

Arlene enjoyed keeping up with everyone via Facebook, genealogy, and community activities and events. Cats lit her up, puzzles passed the time, and Mercer Market chocolate chip cookies sweetened life. She served as Joy Village Clerk for many years.

Arlene’s primary interests were faith, family, and friends. She served as teacher in the Community of Christ congregation located in Muscatine, IA.

Those left to cherish her life and memories are Richard (Diane) Shotwell of Fayetteville, AR, and Sharon (Richard I) Sample of Macomb, IL; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and daughter-in-law, Jana.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Joy Fire Department, or Community of Christ Church.
