Illinois high school students could soon be developing career skills designed by potential future employers under legislation introduced by local State Senator Chuck Weaver. The bill directs the Illinois State Board of Education to set up guidelines allowing high school students over the age of 16 to take part in registered vocational apprenticeship programs.
Weaver says a college career may not be for everyone and there is a real need in the marketplace for employees with vocational skills. Senate Bill 1326 has passed the State Senate unanimously and is now headed to the Illinois House. Weaver’s senate district includes all of Mercer County.
