Local boys basketball regional championship games are set after semifinal play wrapped Wednesday.
At the 2A Mercer County Regional, Sherrard (28-3) used a big second half to pull away from Kewanee (15-18) and win 63-58. The game was tied 30-30 in the final seconds of the first half. James Blackwell made two free throws to put the Tigers up 32-30 at halftime and Sherrard would score the first 18 points of the second half to put it away. Rylan Carton and Carter Brown each scored 14 points in the win.
Orion (25-7) survived to beat Mercer County (14-18) in the second semifinal 39-38. The score was knotted 28-28 at the end of the third quarter. The Chargers opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run to take a 36-28 lead. Mercer County answered with a 10-1 run, which was capped off by a Brady McPeek three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining to put the Golden Eagles ahead 38-37. Orion senior Maddux Arnold drew a could 5.1 seconds on the clock and sunk both free throws to put the Chargers back in front. Mercer County missed a potential game-winning floater at the buzzer.
Sherrard and Orion will play for the regional championship Friday in Aledo at 7 p.m.
At the 2A Macomb Regional, Rockridge (22-10) blasted Farmington (9-20) 74-38. The Rockets held a 27-15 advantage at halftime and outscored the Farmers 27-14 in the third to take a 54-29 lead into the fourth. Caleb Cunico poured in 22 points to lead the Rockets.
Rockridge will play Macomb (24-5) in the title game Friday after the Bombers beat Canton 46-29 in the second semifinal.
