Saturday Sports: Tri-Valley Rallies Late To Stun Top-Ranked Rockridge

Trailing 17-10 after the third quarter, Tri-Valley scored on a pair of explosive plays in the fourth quarter to upset Rockridge 24-17 in the second round of the IHSA Class 2A playoffs on Saturday.

The Vikings tied the game on a 51-yard TD run by Tommy Harris with 8:16 to play in regulation. Rockridge’s ensuing drive stalled at the 20-yard line of Tri-Valley, and on 4th-and-5, a 37-yard field goal attempt fell inches short with 2:03 left.

Two plays later, Tri-Valley quarterback Ethan Moore connected with Owen McLean on a 79-yard TD pass to give the Vikings their first lead of the game, 24-17, with 1:20 to play.

The Rockets (10-1) then turned the ball over on downs after four incomplete passes.

Rockridge’s two touchdowns were 1-yard runs by Cullen Schwigen, which gave the Rockets a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and a 17-10 lead in the third. Bodhi Morales made a 30-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to put Rockridge ahead 10-7 at the break.

Tri-Valley scored a TD on a 10-yard halfback pass in the second quarter when Tommy Harris found Preston Johnson in the endzone to tie the game 7-7. Koen Rebenszki connected on a 23-yard field goal midway through the third quarter that knotted the game up at 10-10 at the time.

Tri-Valley (9-2) advances to play Wilmington (10-1) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
