Mercer County avenged two regular-season losses to Sherrard with an 8-6 win on Monday in the quarterfinals of the IHSA 2A Mercer County Regional.
The Golden Eagles (4-20) broke a scoreless tie with a five-run top of the third inning. Mercer County added a run to make it 6-0 in the top of the fourth. The Tigers (7-20) responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 6-2.
Mercer County extended the lead with two-out RBI hits in the sixth and seventh innings by Grady Norton and Logan Schreurs to hold an 8-2 advantage entering the bottom of the seventh inning, where Sherrard rallied for four runs, but couldn’t tie the game.
John Robert Reed was the winning pitcher for the Golden Eagles, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits in seven innings. He struck out seven batters in the win.
Mercer County advances to play Rockridge (27-7) in Aledo on Wednesday. The Rockets swept the Golden Eagles in TRAC West play by scores of 17-0 and 11-0 in the regular season.
