Luella M. “Sis” Giles, 89 of New Boston, Illinois, died Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Seminary Manor, Galesburg. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, November 22, at New Boston United Methodist Church. Funeral services are 10 a.m., Saturday, November 23, at New Boston United Methodist Church. Burial will be in New Boston Cemetery with a luncheon to follow. Memorials may be directed to New Boston United Methodist Church. Dennison Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Luella Mae Bergquist was born June 25, 1935, at home in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of John Gustav and Mildred Arlene Swap Bergquist. She attended New Boston Elementary then later attended Muscatine High School. On May 2, 1954, she married James Henry Giles in New Boston. They were married 69 years before he passed on August 1, 2023. Sis had worked at a button factory in Muscatine. Her greatest joy was raising her family, and being a farm wife. They enjoyed vacationing in Minnesota, camping at Old Threshers, and camping with the Dunhams, Jeffers, and Baldwins. Her father, John, immigrated from Sweden in 1927. She was proud of her Swedish Heritage, having visited Sweden twice…with Julia in 1994 and Cindy in 1998. Sis was active in the community as member of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Mercer County Home Extension, Birthday Card Club, and 500 Card Club, and as a 4-H Leader. She was an active member of New Boston United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She enjoyed canning, and everyone was welcome at her dinner table.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Cindy Marston, Julia (Tom) Deutsch, James Douglas (Natalie) Giles, and Paul (Debbie) Giles; grandchildren, Kate Marston, Matt (Stacey) Marston, Elizabeth Giles, Haley Giles, Scott Giles, Kristina Giles, and Joe Thompson (Tiffany Daum); brother, John (Iris) Bergquist; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved companion, Tippy II.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Franklin Bergquist; and son-in-law, Jeff Marston.
