IHSA Basketball Advisory Committee To Discuss RPI Postseason Seeding, Potentially Going Away From Coaches Voting

The IHSA basketball advisory committee will discuss changing its postseason seeding format at its annual meeting next month, according to IHSA Assistant Executive Director Chris Schwarz.

Schwarz, who oversees boys basketball for the IHSA, joined WRMJ’s Sportsline in Champaign on Saturday, says he expects discussion regarding a switch to a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) system to determine postseason seeds.

Currently, postseason seeds are determined by a coaches’ vote for each sub-sectional.

Last month, the IHSA announced that postseason seeding for the boys volleyball state series this spring will be determined by an RPI system calculated by MaxPreps for the first time, which takes into account a team’s wins, their opponents’ wins, and their opponents’ opponents’ wins to rank teams.

Schwarz also indicated that he expects the IHSA’s current regional breakdown based on true sub-sectional seeds to continue. This school year, the IHSA changed from the previous model, which sent teams outside of the top four seeds in their sub-sectional to the closest geographical regional site regardless of seed.
