It was a tough day for area athletes at the Class 1A State Track Meet at Eastern Illinois University on Thursday. Only two athletes and two relay teams advanced from the preliminaries. Orion’s Mitch Lee in the shot put and Ryan Wegerer in the 800 made it to Saturday’s finals. The Sherrard and Rockridge 4 X 400 relay teams also advanced.
The Rockridge Rockets pounded Midwest Central 16-0 in four innings in the Class 2A Brimfield Sectional semi-final softball action Thursday. After escaping a first inning jam, the Rockets ignited for nine runs in the bottom of the inning which left no doubt that they would be playing in the championship game. Rockridge will face Tremont today in a rematch of last year’s regional championship game which the Rockets won 5-2. The start time of the game has been moved up to 3:30 pm and will be broadcast on WRMJ and wrmj.com.
