4 Medal At State, Rockets Advance To Supers

Four area track and field athletes medaled at the Class 1A Girls State Track Meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Sherrard’s Mattie Kindelsperger lead the way taking home the gold in the 3200 meter run. Kindelsperger, a senior who will run track and cross country at the University of Louisville, just started competing two years ago. Sherrard shot putter Charlotte Frere took second place and her teammate Kelsey Hutchins was seventh in the high jump. Mercer County’s Eden Mueller was ninth in the 1600 meter run.

The Rockridge Rockets are headed to the softball super-sectional. The top-ranked Rockets downed third-ranked Olympia 11-2 to win their fifth straight sectional championship. Rockridge got off to a quick start when lead off hitter Lexi Hines homered to start the game. Freshman sensation Kendra Lewis allowed three hits as the Rockets improved to 26-0. They will now meet Tri-City out of Buffalo in the Class 2A Super-Sectional on Monday at the East Side Center in East Peoria. WRMJ will once again broadcast the game on 102.3 FM, on the web site, and over the WRMJ app beginning at 4:15 p.m.
