Charlie Edwards has always followed her curiosity—and at Rockridge High School, that passion for learning has blossomed into a vision for the future. A self-proclaimed science lover, Charlie spent her high school years diving deep into biology, anatomy, and botany while also taking on leadership roles in several student organizations.
She credits both her teachers and her upbringing for sparking that interest. “My mom was a science teacher when I was in sixth grade,” she said. “She used to bring home leftover experiments, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.” That early exposure led Charlie to seek out every science class Rockridge had to offer—from human anatomy to zoology.
Zoology, in fact, is where some of her favorite memories come from. “It was me and my best friend, and we got to dissect some pretty cool animals,” Charlie said. “It was hands-on, engaging, and it helped me understand how things work from the inside out.”
Charlie’s interests don’t end in the science lab. She’s been involved in the Gray Matters Leadership Team, FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), National Honor Society, and Student Council. Each group, she says, offered something unique. “I like being part of different communities. There’s value in trying everything and making the most of your time.”
That mindset—of fully embracing opportunity—is one Charlie holds dear. “You don’t want to leave high school with regrets. I wanted to experience it all, to give myself the chance to grow and figure things out,” she explained. Whether planning events, leading meetings, or mentoring younger students, Charlie leaned into every experience.
She describes Rockridge as a place where people genuinely care. “It’s such a close community,” she said. “I’ve known most of my classmates since kindergarten. I could probably tell you what grade I went to their birthday party. That’s the kind of place this is.”
This fall, Charlie will attend Iowa State University and major in genetics, a field that merges her passion for biology with a desire to make an impact. “I want to work in a space where I can help people—maybe something involving kids or public health,” she said. She’s also considering future studies in medicine or genetic counseling.
As she graduates, Charlie leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, leadership, and kindness—and she’s carrying forward a strong sense of purpose. With a steady hand in science and a heart for helping others, Charlie Edwards is ready to explore the building blocks of life—and perhaps change a few along the way.
