Verla Darlene Thompson, 91 of Aledo, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Mercer Manor Rehabilitation in Aledo. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, November 7, at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, November 8, also at Fippinger Funeral Home. Verla was born on December 8, 1932, in Viola, Illinois, the daughter of Earl and Sylvia Anderson Thompson. She graduated from Aledo High School in 1950. Verla worked in the Mercer County Treasurer’s Office for 18 years before becoming the Mercer County Treasurer, where she would retire after 8 years of service.
Verla was a very active member of the Aledo United Methodist Church. She served for many years as a greeter and usher. She was also a member of the Mercer County Republicans, Illinois County Treasurers Association, and the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation. She volunteered for many years at the Mercer County Senior Center serving lunches.
In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling and going to dances. She also loved to travel. She proudly visited all 50 states and Canada.
She is survived by her sister, Eleanor “Curly” McAtee of Aledo; sisters-in-law, Betty Thompson of Peoria, Arizona, and Marilyn Thompson of Edgington; brother-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Leary of Little York; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clair Thompson, Carl Thompson, and Earl “Bud” Thompson; and two sisters, Wanda Fausett and Kathleen Leary.
