Aledo City Council Rejects Proposed Nuisance Cat-Feeding Moratorium

The Aledo City Council has rejected a resolution that would have temporarily paused enforcement of the city’s nuisance-feeding ordinance for residents caring for feral cats.

The resolution failed by a four-to-three vote at Monday’s city council meeting.

The proposal would have established a 90-day moratorium on enforcement of a provision in the city code prohibiting nuisance feeding, giving residents and animal welfare advocates time to explore a local Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program.

The proposed moratorium would have suspended citations, fines and warnings for people feeding feral or community cats who followed clean feeding practices. It would not have protected feeding that resulted in verified rodent or vermin infestations.

According to the resolution, establishing a local program would require coordination with Mercer County.
