An Aledo man connected to two deaths in Moline is dead. Police say Steven Herring was found shot to death Wednesday at a home in the 3300 block of 25th Avenue. Not long after, Donna Ericson’s body was located in another home in the 1800 block of 46th Street. She had also been shot.
Investigators identified 55-year-old Chad Hillyer as a suspect in both deaths. He was the son of Ericson and a close friend of Herring. Later that night, police were called to a suspicious vehicle on a rural road just off I-380 on the border with Tiffin, Iowa. An officer located Hillyer inside the vehicle dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation included a search of Hillyer’s rural Aledo property and also a DNA search warrant for Hillyer.
