Sherrard (10-1) advanced to the championship of the inaugural Mike Hutchins Holiday Classic by going 2-0 in pool play Thursday.
The Tigers opened the day defeating Geneseo (1-12), 57-38. Sherrard led by 34 points at the end of the third quarter. Jack Hatlestad scored 13 points in the win for the Tigers. Rylan Carton, 12 points, and Holland Anderson, 10 points, also were in double figures for the Tigers.
Later in the day, Sherrard beat United Township’s JV team, 48-27.
Sherrard will play #9 Byron (10-0) in the championship at 6:30 p.m., Friday at Harry Hunt Gymnasium at Sherrard High School. Byron beat IVC and Alleman in pool play Thursday.
Mercer County (8-5) won both of its pool play games at the Cliff Warkins Memorial Classic Thursday to qualify for the semifinals of the tournament.
The Golden Eagles opened the day defeating Erie-Prophetstown (1-8), 74-23. Lucas Collison paced Mercer County with 18 points in the first game of the day. Carson Boelens added 15 points. Colby Cox scored 12 points and William Fredrickson was also in double figures with 10 points.
Mercer County then beat Fulton (7-4), 57-47. The Golden Eagles rallied from a nine point deficit in the third quarter to win. Collison poured in 20 points in the win. Cox, 16, and Fredrickson, 10, scored in double figures for Mercer County again in the second game as well.
The Golden Eagles will play Kewanee (8-4) in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m., Friday.
