Aledo is celebrating two ribbon cuttings that showcase the community’s continued investment in quality-of-life projects and honoring its history.
The first celebration is set for Memorial Day at 10 a.m. at Monument Park, just ahead of the city’s traditional 10:45 a.m. parade and 11 a.m. ceremony. The short dedication will highlight new interpretive storyboards detailing the history of Aledo’s Soldier and Sailor Monument, a tribute that has quietly benefited for years from limited annual funding and passionate volunteer stewardship. Mayor Chris Hagloch says community members are encouraged to arrive early to view the new signage and take part in recognizing this meaningful restoration effort.
“The Historic Preservation Commission took this on as a project about, oh probably four or five years ago, and through the city and budgeting and funding they gradually brought the monument park back to life, I guess you could say, and revitalized it. We have a handicapped sidewalk that goes all the way around it now. We refurbished the soldier sailor monument and now we’re ready for a dedication.
It took about three years of work though, didn’t it? It sure did, yeah. You know, a group like that, they don’t get a lot of funding through the city, so, and as you know, projects are not cheap, so they would get about, you know, five to ten thousand dollars a year and they would do what they could with it and they’ve done a fabulous job, so.”
Also coming soon is the much-anticipated Aledo Bark Park, the city’s new off-leash dog area. Final preparations are underway—including concrete work, parking accommodations, and some finishing touches—before the ribbon cutting takes place. An exact date has not yet been announced, but Mayor Hagloch says it will happen “in the next couple weeks,” with details to be shared via city press release and social media.
