Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White is announcing his support for new legislation requiring seat belts on school buses. White’s public stance comes just days after a school bus carrying the Teutopolis basketball team was involved in a crash while on its way to play a basketball game against Rockridge. The accident resulted in multiple minor injuries. The issue has been debated for years, but Secretary of State spokesperson Dave Druker says now is the time to get serious about further protecting school children.
Six other states have laws requiring seat belts in school buses. Cost has often been one of the biggest concerns about passing such a law in Illinois.
