After six sectional setbacks in a row, the Sherrard Tigers finally prevailed and won their first sectional championship since 1990 as they beat the state’s second ranked team, Eureka, 55-48 Thursday night at Rockridge. The Tigers gained some measure of revenge over the Hornets for a 2012 sectional championship set back. Sherrard lead 13-9 at the end of the first quarter as leading scorer Faith Anderson left the game with a knee injury never to return. The Tigers upped the lead to 20-14 at the half and opened with the first five points of the third quarter but the Hornets cut the gap to 35-31 after three. Sherrard used the foul line to hold Eureka off down the stretch and for the game sank 25 free throws to the Hornets 6. The Tigers were lead by Callie Minch and Kendra Mattingly with 16 points each. Sherrard improved to 28-3 and will have a rematch with top ranked Byron at the Monmouth Super-Sectional Monday night. Byron forced 27 Tiger turnovers in a 64-39 victory on January 28th at the Galesburg Shootout.
