A Mercer County Sheriff’s candidate has had his name removed from the primary ballot. Mercer County Clerk Phyllis Bewley says the ruling was handed down by the Mercer County Elections Board concerning Democrat Ron Schoon. She says he can appeal the decision to Mercer County Circuit Court. At issue was the amount of signatures Schoon had for his petition. Bewley says he needed 27 and had 33, but there were nine objections with seven sustained, leaving him with 26 or one short. The candidate challenge was filed by Jan Occhi of Keithsburg. Three other Democrats are running for sheriff–Jeff Dale, Dave Staley and Caryn Brokaw. And two Republicans are running–George Howard and Chris DeFrieze. The primary is March 18th.
