For nearly 60 years the Shale City Brickyards were one of the largest employers in Mercer County. And legend has it that bricks used in the construction of Wrigley Field were produced at the Shale City site (three miles northwest of Viola). The Mercer County Historical Society’s Stephanie Braucht researched the subject for WRMJ News Director Jim Taylor this morning.
