Reduced post office hours have stopped an almost 30-year holiday tradition in Joy, Illinois. The Joy Post Office had been offering a special holiday postal cancellation during December since 1985. But not this year. Acting Postmaster Deb Nelson says their hours have been cut to 7-to-11 a.m. Monday through-Friday and 7-to-9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The special postmark was always designed by a local artist and judged by local patrons of the post office. Each year, upwards of 13,000 cards and letters were stamped with the holiday postmark during December, but Nelson says with the reduced hours the Joy Post Office can not accommodate that type of overflow.
