New Court Date Set In Bertelsen Case

April 24th, 2014

bertelsen schwartzA new court date has been set in the two criminal cases against Mercer County Treasurer Mike Bertelsen. A status hearing is scheduled for May 15th in Rock Island County. The 54-year old Bertelsen is facing theft charges, accusing him of stealing county 911 funds and also stealing from the Mercer County Republican Party. The cases have moved along very slowly. The Republican Party case was filed in August of 2012 with the county 911 case filed in July of 2013.

Just last month, Judge Frank Fuhr denied a defense motion to suppress concerning statements Bertelsen made to Illinois State Police Investigator Ryan Tone.

Bertelsen is still getting paid as treasurer. His term runs through December 1st. The Mercer County Board has banned him from returning to his office and he has not worked since last August. Bertelsen remains free on bond.
