Motion To Suppress Denied In Bertelsen Case

bertelsen schwartzSome movement in the criminal cases against Mercer County Treasurer Mike Bertelsen. Judge Frank Fuhr has denied a defense motion to suppress concerning statements Bertelsen made to Illinois State Police Investigator Ryan Tone. In his ruling, Fuhr said a pre-trial conference should be set immediately so the matter can move to trial. The 54-year old Bertelsen is facing theft charges, accusing him of stealing county 911 funds and also stealing from the Mercer County Republican Party. He will continue to get paid as treasurer unless he is convicted of a felony. His term runs through December 1st. The Mercer County Board has banned him from returning to his office. He has not worked since early August, but continues to draw a paycheck from the county. Bertelsen remains free on bond.
