Mercer County unemployment dips under six percent. The latest figure from the Illinois Department of Employment Security shows the June jobless rate at 5.8 percent. That compares to the 6.8 percent number recorded during the same period a year ago. Unemployment is also down from year ago levels in Rock Island, Henry, Henderson, Knox and Warren Counties. In the region last month, job gains occurred in Leisure-Hospitality, Professional-Business Services, Retail Trade, Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities and Wholesale Trade sectors. Statewide, the unemployment rate is 7.1 percent with the national rate at 6.3 percent. The highest unemployment rate in Western Illinois is in Fulton County at 8.4 percent.
